Notes: If the previous show was nirvana, this one is beyond that. An excellent show with rowdy audience that caused the reaction from the side of the authorities. "We've got to get these house lights down. It's pretty pointless us bringing our own lights, if we've got these things going on. Mr Cole, can you take your dress off and get these lights turned down please?" asked Plant in rather humorously mood. His voice is cracking and breaking all over the place, but the band is playing exceptionally well, and from Dazed And Confused on, this show reaches its peak. Dazed has a unique, very dark and thrilling bow solo and Heartbreaker, Whole Lotta Love and the encore are gutsy and raw and Robert has recovered. John Bonham was introduced as the Drag Queen of New Orleans.<-(Info taken from -Argenteum Astrum).

Some of the first releases to compact disc were Live And Led Live and Live And Led Live Again from Flying Disc, Johnny Piston & the Dogs on Thin Men, and Drag Queen on the original Tarantura label. New Orleans 1973 on TDOLZ came out in 1999 and like all the others was exclusively from the soundboard. In 2006 a virtually complete audience source became available and both Bourbon Street Renegades on Empress Valley and The Witch Queen on Tarantura were released as 6CD sets containing both the audience and soundboard sources. The Drag Queen Of New Orleans from Godfather is the latest presentation of the New Orleans show this time in a 3CD format that gives priority to the soundboard with the audience source used to fill a couple gaps.<-(Info taken from collectorsmusicreviews.com).

Notes: The Great Gates Of Nürnbergis one of two recent releases by the Highland label from ELP’s tour of Europe. This is right before the release of their second LP Tarkus and surpisingly only the title track is played. Some confusion about the date exists. Highland follows the common assumption and places this tape on June 11th which places it between the June 10th show in Offenbach and the June 12th appearance at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Other sources place this show a week earlier on June 2nd between the June 1st gig in Karlsruhe and the June 3rd Vienna tape. The sound quality lies between fair too good. There is very little tape hiss so it is probably a low generation source used by the label. Parts of softer volume like Lake’s acoustic solo “The Sage” are more difficult to hear than the electric passages.<-(Info taken from Collectos Music Reviews).

Notes: Animals In Beligum was supposed to be the silver pressed debut of the February 20th, 1977 show at the Sportspaleis in Antwerp, Belgium. Unfortunately, Godfather made the common error is pressing the February 22nd show at the Pavillion de Paris, France. The Paris show has been issued many times before, most recently on Funhouse (Siréne-220). Godfather sounds very good and is an excellent edition of the show.

The chracteristics of the legitimate Antwerp tape are: “Sheep” missing the beginning soundscape, “Dogs” having a cut at 15:37, Roger Waters shouting out “13 in “Pigs (Three Different Ones),” “Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts I-V)” missing the beginning, Edith Piaf and a female DJ speaking Flemish is audible on the radio before “Wish You Were Here,” and audience conversations in both Flemish and Belgian French are audible throughout the show.

This tape circulated as Antwerp for many years. And, to add to the confusion, the legitimate Antwerp tape is missing “Money” and the first Paris show’s encore is used as a replacement. Despite the error, this is a very good release by Godfather. The sound is much better than Funhouse and is highly recommended. The packaging is also up to the label’s usualy high standards. Perhaps they can print sleeves with the correct information in future runs. (Info taken from collectorsmusicreviews.com).

Notes: The ELO Hits Medley: For the first time, the band played many of their hits as a long medley, rather than individual songs. It's not entirely clear why this was done, but probably because they had more hits than they could conceivably play fully without the show being too long, it was done as a way of providing more songs in a shorter amount of time. The medley was played shortly after the John Lennon tribute and played many of the ELO hits (and a few popular non-hits) in roughly chronilogical release order. The songs performed in the medley varied during the US leg of the tour from the European leg. The medly included the songs (in order) Showdown, Ma-Ma-Ma Belle, Can't Get It Out Of My Head, Strange Magic (USA shows only), Wild West Hero (European shows only), Fire On High, Turn To Stone, Standin' In The Rain, Mr. Blue Sky, Sweet Talkin' Woman, Shine A Little Love, Last Train To London, Confusion, Do Ya (European shows only) and Rockaria!. Although Do Ya was excluded from the medley during the US performances, it was performed in full later in the show.

John Lennon Tribute: One of the special performances at the concert was a tribute to John Lennon. Lennon was an influence and idol for Jeff and he had been murdered in December of 1980. The tribute came halfway through the show and featured a medley of Lennon's song's, including a short keyboard intro of Imagine by Richard Tandy; a gentle keyboard version of Nowhere Man (again by Richard); a full version of Across The Universe with Jeff on lead vocals and acoustic guitar and Kelly on soaring backing vocals; and finally a full version of A Day In The Life with Jeff on lead vocals and acoustic guitar. At each show, Jeff introduced it as "our tribute to John Lennon" and afterwards Bev Bevan came out from behind the drums to thank the audience and introduce the ELO Hits Medley (except when Bev was out sick, when bassist Kelly Groucutt did the honors). Notes: The Fort Worth recording from July 18th is the best sounding recording from The Rolling Stones’ legendary 1978 Some Girls tour. It was previously released on Handsome Girls on The Swingin’ Pig (TSP-CD-200-4), Handsome Girls on Dandelion (DL 030/031/032/033) and reprinted on Out On Bail on Vinyl Gang (VGP-278), Cowgirl Barbeque, Gorgeous Girls Redux on Sister Morphine (Morph 024), and From Lakeland To Oakland (RED 006/007). Last year it was included on the excellent four disc set Handsome Girls: Definitive Version on Devil Productions. Now Halcyon has issued No Flash No Gimmicks. This label by the Empress Valley people has an impressive track record in improving already great tapes and this title isn’t a disappointment. Last year’s Devil Productions was great, but this one is dramatically better. The stereo separation sounds wider, louder, clearer and generally livelier. Balance between the vocals, instruments and audience is close to perfect and the music seems to leap out of the speakers and pummel the listener that is rare even for an official release much less an underground recording like this. The recording is so vivid and clear it is easy to see Mick dancing around and Keith slashing the strings on the guitar.
But No Flash No Gimmicks is such a dramatic improvement over previous releases it is hard to expect any improvements in the future. Like all other Halcyon releases the inserts are printed on very thick glossy paper with the star holograms implanted in the mix. The cover has the close up picture of Keith and a dramatic live shot in the inside. It can confidently be said that Halcyon have released the final word on the Fort Worth tape.
